Struggle and Solace of Not Fitting In

Posted on August 18, 2023 by Perspective Mapper

It is human desire to want to fit in. As social creatures, we find comfort in group identification, relishing the sense of belonging that comes with feeling integrated into a community. Yet, for a multitude of reasons, some of us often find ourselves on the outside looking in. This can lead to immense struggles, creating a tangle of emotions and experiences that we grapple with daily.

This topic is close to my heart because I strive to find common ground among diverse perspectives, and I have also experienced the feeling largely not at all fitting into our society.

The Outcast Experience

The feeling of not fitting could begin as a slim thread of alienation that begins to tug on your social fabric. It can stem from a myriad of sources – perhaps you think differently, your interests diverge from the societal norm, or maybe your lifestyle doesn’t mesh with others. Your beliefs, values, or the way you approach life can make you feel like an outsider.

One of the earliest and most palpable consequences is a profound sense of loneliness. It’s like being on the outside of a translucent glass pane, capable of seeing and hearing the world carry on its activities, yet feeling like an observer, rather than a participant. This isolation often leads to a potent cocktail of emotions – frustration, anxiety, sadness, and sometimes even a creeping sense of despair.

Daily Struggles

An individual who doesn’t fit societal norms can struggle on various fronts – public acceptance, employment opportunities, personal relationships, and mental health, to name a few. Even help they might seek in the form of advisors or mentors could severely misunderstand or misconstrue their life journey.

These struggles can have far-reaching effects on the individual’s life.

In professional settings, conformity is often rewarded above creativity. Those who find it challenging to fit in may experience career stagnation or struggle with fulfilling job requirements that conflict with their personal values or life patterns.

On a personal level, the judgment and lack of empathy from others can result in low self-worth, making it difficult for the individual to express their true nature. This can hamper the relating with others, increasing feelings of detachment and isolation.

Embracing Your Unique Self

Cultivating a 24/7 remembrance of an innate connection to a higher Truth is THE tool for feeling detached. This consistent, affirmative reminder of divine Love and acceptance can equip those of us who don’t fit societal norms with the strength to stand strong in their authenticity.

In addition, redefining success and identifying our own metrics for happiness can lead to a more fulfilling life. In fact, living in a meditative state, being in tune with yourself, and aligning your actions with your values can offer a sense of inner fulfillment that societal acceptance might not provide or could very well distract us from.

Harmonizing Outsider Perspectives

The future lies in recognizing the value that outsider perspectives feed into societal progress.

Remember, society is an evolving concept, and the norms change over time. Any society needs its outliers, its iconoclasts, those who can view the world from a distinct vantage point and contribute their unique insights. When we learn to embrace these perspectives, we not only grow as individuals but also progress as a society.

It’s no small feat to navigate through life feeling like you don’t fit in anywhere. But, it offers a unique opportunity to grow and develop a deep, inherent strength. So, as you walk the path of your unique destiny, hold on to your true Self, honor your journey, and remember that your unique perspective matters….simply as it is.
