We often treat patience as a virtue – that it’s best to avoid riding our impulses, lest we sabotage our life goals and pursuits. Or, best to allow good things to mature on their own time, as we can’t alter the course of nature. These sound great. However, when we take a couple of steps closer, we discover serious problems with this approach.
Patience is disempowering – it assumes there is nothing we can do right now but sit back and watch. It marginalizes the continuous, active role we play in the universe, as if the universe can somehow moves forward, mature, or even exist without us.
Another flaw with patience is that it projects into the future an ideal state that we don’t see as available to us in the moment – it comes with the baggage that the goodies exist only in a future projected state — not now. This is not aligned with meditation efforts of tuning into present salvation, rather as resting on future salvation.
An alternative to cultivating patience is realizing and expressing the transformation we go through each and every moment. We can shift internally — what attitudes, what thoughts, what sensations within us are we transforming, and are transforming within us, at this very moment, in line with our desire.
This focus is consummate — it captures everything, leaving no residue. The concept of waiting for an imagined future state simply evaporates.
