How Hollywood Perverts “Love Our Enemies”

Posted on August 13, 2023August 13, 2023 by Perspective Mapper

Hi there. In this article, I’ll be delving into Hollywood’s misrepresentation of “Love Your Enemies”. Hollywood, a veritable colossus in shaping our global consciousness, has largely tossed aside this edict in the name of elevating our base instincts of self-interest for profits.

Love Compromised

Hollywood’s portrayal of love often sees it as a liability rather than as an inherent strength it truly is. Consider the classic movie “Braveheart”. In this epic historical drama, the protagonist, William Wallace, portrayed by Mel Gibson, struggles with compassion for King Edward I. Mercy and empathy towards this antagonist – a tyrant king – were considered obstacles on his path for freedom for his people. This narrative distorts the essential concept of ‘love your enemies’, introducing a false dichotomy between compassion and confrontation – suggesting that one cannot extend kindness to an adversary without weakening their own stand. This bears pondering, particularly if we are to coexist with other sentient beings, including AI, in a not-too-distant future.

The ‘Black and White’ Narrative

The overbearing presence of ‘us versus them’ plot in Hollywood significantly dilutes the potency of the viewpoint complexity. Take “Harry Potter”, the story setting has Harry and Voldemort on opposite ends of the spectrum stunting any possibility of empathy or understanding for Voldemort, who is painted heavily as ‘the enemy’.

Revenge Rejoiced

Hollywood tends to champion the revenge saga, exemplified in movies like “Kill Bill” and “The Revenant”. Through their pronounced ‘eye for an eye’ ethos, they inadvertently celebrate revenge as a satisfying form of justice. This stark narrative opposes the profound wisdom of understanding, empathy, and ultimate love for one’s enemies as is inherent in the command to ‘love your enemies’.

Evil Incarnate

Hollywood often envisions villains as the embodiment of relentless evil. An example can be seen in “No Country for Old Men”, where the antagonist, Anton Chigurh, is impersonal and purely malevolent, offering no room for empathy. By creating characters devoid of redeeming qualities, it shuts the door to any potential for loving the enemy.

Simplified Salvation

Hollywood’s representations of forgiveness, for example in “The Green Mile”, tend to gloss over the intricate emotional turmoil and the psychological wrestling involved in the process towards true forgiveness. This inadequately simplified narrative belies the profound transformation inherent in coming to terms with, understanding, forgiving, and ultimately, loving one’s enemies.

Reorienting Perception: A Call to Critical Engagement

Although Hollywood significantly impacts global cultural cognition, it often stumbles in its representation of spiritual profundities like ‘loving your enemies’. As discerning consumers, we ought to critically contend with these conveniently abridged narratives, striving to foster a deeper, more nuanced understanding – one that harmonizes seemingly conflicting perspectives and aligns us with the Common Ground within us all.
